Gaining A Competitive Advantage... Through RSS?

A lot of the time, when I talk to about businesses about the power of social computing, I get their attention when I show them some powerful ways to keep us with their competitor through blog searches and subscribing to RSS feeds about their competitor.

But their eyes really light up when I start to talk about the power of RSS for keeping an eye on their own company.

Seriously.

In seminars, I like to ask one business owner for their permission to do some quick searches for their name and/or the company name.  Ten times out of ten, permission is granted.

Then, I head off to a few simple places -- usually Technorati and Google Blog Search -- and just do a search on the name.  Of course, then I show them how easily they can save that search into an RSS Reader, then show them how I watch my own name on a daily basis.

Sure, I've got to overcome the fact that there are some other souls out there who share my name, but the lesson is powerful...

If you don't know what people are saying about you, it's high-time you find out.  A lot better to respond proactively than the other way... or not?
